Come back to me with an empty cup. View 1 comment. Feb 02, Gavin Richardson rated it it was amazing. I really enjoyed this read.

Shannon had a really disarming way of sharing a swatch of information from the wisdom traditions laced in her and her father's language.

Nov 13, Liman rated it it was amazing. My first 5-star book! This was probably the best book I have ever read in , and let me tell you why.

Shannon Lee is the daughter of the famous martial artist, actor, and philosopher, Bruce Lee. And this, in my knowledge, is her very first book.

In this book, she tried to capture and break down the meaning of Bruce Lee's most well known quote "Be Water, My Friend" from her own perspective.

We might remember Bruce Lee as a martial artist and we might ask the same thing, My first 5-star book! We might remember Bruce Lee as a martial artist and we might ask the same thing, can we implement Bruce Lee's philosophy in our daily lives?

Is it suitable for lives outside martial arts? Well, prepare yourself to be overwhelmed by Shannon, because she literally explained Bruce Lee's philosophies from 2 different perspectives.

Shannon explained how her father did his training while implementing his own philosophies, and afterward she tells us how his words can be performed in our daily life.

What makes this book so special to me is because Bruce Lee's quote "Be Water, My Friend" was my first favorite quote ever.

I was a seventh grader back then, and I was surfing the internet on my school computer, which then I discovered a video of Bruce Lee talking about his "Be Water" quote.

I was so enamored with the way he explained his words. From that day onwards, I like to use the "Be Water, My Friend" quote as my life motto.

But, back then I was just a boy, so I did not know the meaning behind it. As I entered university, my life began to crumble.

I lost myself. I lost my "life motto". I lost Bruce Lee's words. Today, I am pretty much screwed up. On the 21st of September , I ordered this book.

Excited to rediscover my "used to be" life motto. There is something special when we are going to do something in this case, reading a book that we once adore.

And guess what, I have no complain, and I have no regret buying it! I am overwhelmed by this book. I tried to typed all the important sentences that I thought would be useful, but I ended up typing almost everything!

Other than Bruce Lee's philosophies. I also learned how his daughter, Shannon, interpret and apply her father's philosophies into her everyday life.

Which is also ours. I need to be able to observe myself in order to see what I need to amend. Shannon is not only explaining and showing her perspective on her father's philosophies.

She also put some additional information from other experts which were related to Bruce Lee's philosophies.

In summation, I have no objection for any words written in this book. Every chapters have different lesson, and Shannon successfully portrays her understanding to this book.

This is the type of book I will re read again and again, especially when I am at my lowest. Thankyou, Shannon Lee. Be formless, shapeless, like water.

You out water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. You put it into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. Now water can flow, or it can crash!

Be water, my friend. Oct 19, Bookworm rated it liked it. As soon as I saw this I was immediately intrigued. I know the basic contours of Bruce Lee's life as a martial artist, had seen some of his movies, was aware he had a son named Brandon who also died young.

Bruce Lee served as a basis for the character Liu Kang of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise and so forth. So I did not know exactly what to expect from this: I thought it would be philosophy and life wisdom from him and it is.

It's also part memoir of Shannon his daughter , part biography As soon as I saw this I was immediately intrigued. It's also part memoir of Shannon his daughter , part biography of Lee himself, a self-help book.

Normally I would be very upset at a book that doesn't seem to quite know what it wants to be but at the same time I did find bits and pieces of it useful as someone who is not all that familiar with Bruce Lee I needed to know more about his life to understand his writings, work, etc.

So it's not a "traditional" work of being a memoir or biography or self-help book, etc. I would also argue that it might help if you have martial arts in your background Shannon Lee explicitly says this isn't necessary but I personally thought it was helpful.

As she also says, though, these philosophies can still be applied to "everyday" life, too. It was also nice that the book seems to be at least somewhat of a response to Quentin Tarantino's comments on Lee.

It wasn't necessary to respond to him and I don't think he was named in the text? Overall, I'm glad I picked it up. Normally I hate self-help books and usually books that feel like a mish-mash of genres do not work for me and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't for others , but it was also useful for me to read right now.

If you're entire martial arts, want to know more about Bruce Lee, etc. I would say this would be a good pick up for a read and might be a good purchase for the right person.

Library borrow for me but I wouldn't have minded if I got this as a bargain buy, either. Nov 12, Dave rated it liked it. Bruce gets the credit for saying it during one of his scenes on the t.

I have been inspired by Bruce Lee since childhood and only recently read Matthew Polly's biography entitled "Bruce Lee: a life" I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in Bruce Lee.

Looking for more books about him I happened upon Shannon Lee's recent book. Some of t "Be water my friend" is a deeply philosophical quote by Bru- er I mean Stirling Silliphant, Bruce's Oscar-winning screenwriter friend.

Some of the best sections found in "Be Water my Friend" are also mentioned in Polly's biography so if you've read it it doesn't come as anything new.

In fact, Polly names names in his work so when Shannon mentions a challenge match ending with the opposing fighter running away from Bruce, if you've read the biography you know she's refering to Wong Jackman, likewise when she mentions the script-writer who the production company claimed to have fired but kept on.

I did appreciate Shannon not naming names though, it's kind of her. Nevertheless this was an interesting work by Shannon Lee.

She related her father's philosophy practically and maintained the martial arts connection very well without making this a book that only applies to martial artists.

I did find the book to be a little New Agey at times but Shannon often enough rose above the typical New Age drabble by taking a more solid approach.

At one point she even mentions Rhonda Byrne's "The Secret" and one up's it's concept of positivity and the law of attraction. I appreciated her treatment of that work.

Overall I found this book to be alright. Shannon seems to be true to herself and the philosophy of her father, she makes herself vulnerable to the reader by admitting she's also a work in progress and hasn't fully embodied the Being Water philosophy.

I don't personally like self-help books and feel that she kept just off the margin of being full-on self-help and more philosophical.

I highly recommend the Audible version of this book as you get to hear Shannon read it herself! Shannon Lee brings a well put summary of her father's philosophy of life, the "Be Water, my friend" philosophy.

As she clearly states from the beginning this is her interpretation, but one worth reading if you admire Bruce Lee. So what qualifies me to be your guide?

I have no expertise in anything other than Bruce Lee. And even that is a particular kind of expertise not based on a vast knowled Shannon Lee brings a well put summary of her father's philosophy of life, the "Be Water, my friend" philosophy.

And even that is a particular kind of expertise not based on a vast knowledge of dates and times and events.

My expertise is in having known and been loved by him, in having gratitude for the gift of him, in living his words as best I can, and in trying diligently to find my own self.

Many Bruce Lee ideas may seem not unique, and indeed they are. He studied philosophy and practice martial arts with a great "teacher", but what is remarkable is that many of his conclusions are today part of the teachings of modern coaches, philosophers and leaders.

We could say that he was ahead of his time. A remarkable human being that set the example of how to live a life worth living, to value people as people and breakdown artificial and contextual barriers that don't mean anything anymore, to take responsibility of our own live by working hard and purposefully instead of demanding others to provide while surrendering our freedom.

And we now know to expect the unexpected as well. Keeping your cognitive abilities in top form is still vital.

But it may be even more important to improve your emotional and intellectual adaptability. We can only flow with the course of events and look for opportunity among the adversity.

Believe me that in every big thing or achievement there are always obstacles, big or small, and the reaction one shows to such obstacles is what counts, not the obstacle itself.

I have learned that being challenged means one thing and that is, what is your reaction to it? It embraces adaptability.

Bruce Lee said to " empty your mind ", and explained that a person should be " formless " like water. Lee said that because water has no shape, it becomes whatever it is poured into, whether it be a cup, a bottle, or a teapot.

Lee went on to say, " water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend ". When Lee says to be " formless ", he means that people shouldn't allow themselves to be trapped in a certain mindset.

That's the basic interpretation of the phrase, but there's actually deeper meaning to be found in it, which can be more easily understood when looking at Lee's background and his previous comments about water.
